I can't stop listening to this guy's music! He wears a white mask (think V for Vendetta, although he came along before it), and a KFC bucket on his head. He is, to put it simply, damn good.If you haven't heard of him before, let me give you a brief summary. And that's not even an accurate count, because nearly everyday for the past two weeks, I've listened to my Giant Robot cd on the way to work in my car, and I've also been listening to other Buckethead incessantly on my iPod.
I can pick a few simple tunes I know from the piano, but beyond that, I can't do much yet. Now, I have virtually no experience on the guitar (although I did pick up my uncle's, which he left in our house about a year ago, and start trying to pick it up a few days ago. Of course, he also has songs that are titled "I love my parents" and "For mom," so unless chickens listen to music now, it may be that he does indeed have human parents.In any case, his true identity, at least as he's relevant to all of us, is that of an ultra-talented guitar virtuoso. He calls himself Buckethead, and he claims that he was raised by chickens in a chicken coop.
I believe he played for them in a performance on national television once, but I could be wrong. One of the tracks, titled "Soothsayer (Dedicated to Aunt Suzie)" was so beautiful and emotional that I wrote about it for my music class last semester.Most people probably heard of him early in this decade when he joined Guns N Roses for a short time. The first one I heard, Crime Slunk Scene, showed off a few different sides to Buckethead's mastery of the guitar. But several of his albums show another side of him. Most would say that his trademark is his ridiculously fast "shredding," and there's no doubt that he can do that.
It turned out, the song was from a band called Praxis. For a while, I had no way to figure out what it was, until I downloaded a program called Tunatic, which figured it out for me (or maybe it was IEatBrainz—they both do the same thing, albeit in a different manner). See, I had this song title "Waking The Dead" which was incorrectly attributed to A Perfect Circle. I first found out about Buckethead late November just last year.
He's been central to bands such as the Deli Creeps and Praxis among others. He has, according to Wikipedia, released 21 solo albums and performed on 31 other albums. Bucketheadland and Bucketheadland 2 are probably more "signature Buckethead," if there is such a thing.One of the more astounding things about him is just how prolific he is. Both are more mellow than a lot of his stuff, Electric Tears being mostly acoustic and featuring nothing more than Buckethead's guitar with no accompaniments (although he layers different tracks frequently). Giant Robot and Crime Slunk Scene were absolutely fabulous, however.Among the ones I recently acquired, my favorites so far have been Population Override (which is not only an amazing piece of musicianship, but a fascinating concept album as well) and Electric Tears.
Soothsayer, probably my favorite track of his (though there are many more to listen to and dissect), is the most emotional and most beautiful song I ever heard. The average vocalist/lyricist can't come close, and that's with the added bias of having the human brain more sensitive to the human voice than other sounds. His compositions are instrumentals for the most part, although he will weave skits into them, especially on albums like Giant Robot and Bucketheadland, but the emotion he can produce with a guitar alone is breathtaking. Osbourne.What impresses me most about the man's musicianship isn't his proficiency on the guitar at all, but his outstanding songwriting abilities. Which is incomprehensible to anyone remotely familiar with Mr. Ozzy ended up not wanting his to play because, essentially, he was just too wierd for Ozzy.
Giant Robot, for example, can only be described as off the wall and ridiculous. While some of his albums are relatively serious or straightforward, many of them are interspersed with skits or jokes. Other tracks are very bluesy, and yet others are best described as funk.The one thing that divides people most about Buckethead is probably his sense of humor. Other times, one can make a case that he goes almost into the New Age genre, while on yet other tracks his play would undoubtedly jazz. Island Of Lost Minds, for example, is Avant Garde and has a very harsh sound, while on other albums he plays spectacular heavy metal riffs and solos. Tracks like Soothsayer show this to be pure folly.Aside from that, its his ability to play just about every style imaginable that is so impressive.
Bucketheadland is similar in many aspects, but tells more of a story (apparently it is essentially a tour of Bucketheadland, which is an amusement park). "I Come In Peace" is basically a skit in which what sounds like a news reporter describes the events which unfold as a giant Buckethead attacks Tokyo (they find out that he's only destroying chicken coops, and he then leads the chickens to a fortified coop on mount Fuji). The song "Onions Unleashed" tells a bit about Onions, from the first person. The father replies with a very abridged summary of Buckethead's supposed history (the chicken coop and all that), and ends it by saying, ".and without the bucket on his head, he's powerless." The child then, in a very serious manner, simply replies, "Really? Oh my God." Buckethead then proceeds into ridiculous shredding.
His humor doesn't stop there, however.
